Cleaning The Air Filters At Home- A Most Important Task

Cleaning the air filter at home is not difficult, but it’s very important. It will protect your cooling and heating system, as well as your health.

You can find the air filter behind the so-called “return” vent. There may be more than one returns, so clean them all.

Some filters can be cleaned, others – just replaced. If you’re unsure which kind your filters are, search on the internet. If they are, however, with cardboard frames, then they are definitely to be replaced.

If the ones you have are cleanable, you will need a ladder or a stool, a screwdriver, a brush for cleaning, a vacuum cleaner with attachments, and running water.

1. Reach the air return using a ladder or a stool, if it’s needed.

2. Unscrew the screws or flip the latches that keep the vent closed.

3. Take the filter out.

4. If possible, go outside for this cleaning, as it can be messy.

5. Remove the dust, dirt and debris with the brush.

6. Turn the vacuum cleaner on and use the hose attachment to suck up the loosened dirt from the filter.

7. When you’re finished with that, flip the filter over, and run it through some water. A spray nozzle will be perfect for this.

8. Leave it to air dry before putting it back on.

If your filters have to be replaces, remove one of them, measure their sizes to determine what size the replacement must be. When you get new ones, here’s how to replace them.

You will need a ladder or a stool, a screwdriver, and a replacement filter.

1. Place the ladder or stool in order to reach the air return if needed.

2. Unscrew the screws or flip the latches that keep the vent closed.

3. Take out the old filter.

4. Place the new filter in the intended space and make sure that the arrows on the edge point correctly.

5. Close and screw in the screws/latch it again.

There’s not a determined length of time between cleanings or replacements, as it’s different in each home. Here’s how you can determine this yourself.

You will need a ladder or a stool, and several disposable air filters.

1. Place the ladder or stool in order to reach the air return if needed.

2. Open the vent and remove the used air filter.

3. Place the new one.

4. Check the filter after one week, and if necessary, replace it.

5. Check again after one week.

6. Continue checking once a week and record each time you need to replace the filter.

7. When the excess dust has been removed from your house, the time between changes will be stabilized.
