Local Kennington Info
Kennington is a residential district which is mostly located in Central London. It is proved that in the past the area used to be a sacred gathering place and the presence of number of mounds scattered across the area proves that theory.
The ancient area name originally means place/ town of the King. In the past Kennington was “Chenintune”, and later “Kyning-ton”. It used to be a huge domain which was a property of Teodric the Goldsmith. Later Edward III gave the manor of Kennington to his son Edward the Black Prince who built a royal palace near Kennington Cross. This medieval estate occasionally was the residence of Henry IV, VI and VII.
Interesting places to visit are the Imperial War Museum, the international cricket ground, The Oval and the national museum, the Garden Museum, Tibetian Peace Gardens, the Lambeth Palace, Beaconsfield, the Archbishop’s Park, and St. Mark’s Pentecostal Church. Kennington Park is a place with a fascinating history. In the past it was called Kennnington Common. It shelters many historic trees and provides a lot of open areas for biodiversity and wildlife. The park offers children’s facilities, a playground, and tennis courts, along with other sports such as basketball, netball, football and hockey. If you are cricket fan, you can visit the Kennington Community Cricket Ground, too. Also Kennington Park was the destination for the world’s first motorised double-decker bus.
Some of the notable Kennington’s residents: Vincent van Gogh, Charie Chaplin, Bob Marley, Eliza Cook, William Blake, Bernard Montgomery, Felix Slade, and others.
