Local Westminster Info

Located in the very heart of London, Westminster includes some of the capital’s most noticeable and important buildings, keeping the historic tradition of the nation.

The small mediaeval village of Westminster grew at the construction site of the great cathedral, which began taking shape during the reign of Henry III in the 13th century. Built in the predominant for its epoch gothic style, it immediately dominated the skyline of London, when completed. Serving as the seat of the Archbishop of London, the Westminster Abbey has been the site of coronation of all English kings and queens ever since. One of the monarchy’s greatest regal signs- St Edward’s Chair- stands in the very centre of the church and is a solemn witness of the thousand-years-long history of the Kingdom.

When William the Conqueror entered London after his victory at Hastings, he immediately chose the Westminster palace for his residence. It served this purpose until 1512, when a great fire damaged it so bad that the Court had to move to Whitehall. After its reconstruction it first was designated to shelter the Royal Court, but during the Long Revolution the Parliament used it as a place of assembly- a role it has served ever since. Today Westminster is a metonym for parliamentary tradition and constitutional power.

The third centre of authority that Westminster is proud of is the splendid Buckingham Palace. Queen Victoria was the first monarch to use it as a permanent residence, after it was greatly enlarged in the beginning of the 19th century. The Palace still remains one of the most imposing buildings in London and possibly the most beautiful royal residence in Europe. It attracts millions of tourists from all around the world every year.
