Local Bermondsey Info

Bermondsey SE1 is one of the areas in South London and also a part of the London Borough of Southwark.

Situated near the very heart of the capital of the United Kingdom, Bermondsey is one of the areas with the most ancient history. The earliest written appearance of Bermondsey is in the Domesday Book of 1086. However, there is a source from the 12th century, which describes some even earlier events of the history of Bermondsey.

In the Domesday Book Bermondsey appears as Bermundesy and Bermundesye, which was most likely the nascent Bermondsey Abbey and it is also known that the area was held by King William. The Knights Templar also owned land and they have even given their names to one of the most distinctive streets in London, Shad Thames.

With the arrival of industrial plants, docks and immigrant housing, in the mid-19th century some parts of Bermondsey – especially those along the riverside – had become a notorious place. And do you know that one of the worst parts of London – the area around St Saviour’s Dock was immortalised by Charles Dickens in his novel Oliver Twist?

In the last years of the 19th century and the early 20th century the area was redeveloped and underwent through some serious changes. Bermondsey’s manufacturing role became greater with the industrial boom of the 19th century. In the 20th century to the east of Tower Bridge 3.5 miles of riverside were lined with warehouses and wharves, of which the best known is Butler’s Wharf. All of them were seriously damaged in World War II bombing. Now many of the wharves are converted into a mixture of residential and commercial accommodations and have become some of the most expensive properties not only in the area itself, but also in London.

Some of the places of interest in the area are: Bermondsey antiques market, Tower Bridge, HMS Belfast, London Dungeon, Fashion and Textile Museum, Shad Thames, Mandela Way T-34 Tank, Miloco Studios, Millwall F.C., Bermondsey Spa Gardens, and Haunch of Venison. You can also go and visit the City of London, Southwark, Peckham, Canary Wharf, Deptford, Rotherhithe, New Cross, Newington and Walworth.

You will have absolutely no problem getting to any of these places, because Bermondsey is excellently-served by London public transport. You can use Bermondsey tube station, South Bermondsey tube station, London Bridge station, Borough tube station, Rotherhithe station, Canada Water tube station and Surrey Quays station.
