Local Clapton Info

The district of Clapton E5 is located in north-west London and is separated in two parts – Upper and Lower. Clapton is located in the London Borough of Hackney.

Between 14th and 18th century Clapton was known as Clopton, which means “the farm on the hill”.

Clapton was developing along the way called Hackney Lane, which ran through Clapton Common. In the 19th century manorial courts distinguished the parts north and south of Lea Bridge Road as Upper and Lower Clapton. Soon Hackney Lane was known as Lower and Upper Clapton roads. The expanding through the common to Stamford Hill was known as Clapton Common.

In the 1990s and early 2000s the area of Upper and Lower Clapton had a dark fame for gun and drug related crimes. The district was even known as “Murder Mile”.

The area has many green spaces like Millfields Park, Hackney Marshes and Clapton Park.

Springfield Park, which was formed in 1905 from the grounds of three mansions, is one of the Upper Clapton’s most preferred places. The park is running down the hill, which is at the east shore of the river Lea. From three private houses is surviving only Springfield House (known as the White House). Now it houses a café and a municipal rangers station. Springfield Park offers many sport attractions to its visitors: five tennis courts, a cricket pitch, rugby fields and football pitches. In July 2008 the park receives a Green Flag award. In the south-eastern corner of the Springfield Park is the famous Anchor and Hope pub. It is one of the few surviving buildings in the area after Second World War bombing.

To the west of Springfield Park is located Clapton Pond, an interesting place for bird watchers – here can be seen geese, ducks, swans, grebes, waders and many other kinds of birds.

In Clapton there are some places of worship like the Church of the Good Shepherd, founded in 1895, the stately New Synagogue, which is built in 1915 and is replica of the Great St Helen’s Synagogue of 1838.

Like most of the districts in Eastern London, Clapton is social diverse and multicultural. You can see this in the local shops and restaurants, especially on Chatsworth Road – they offer Turkish, French, African, Asian and Caribbean produce.

Some of the notable local residents were Nathaniel Woodard (a notorious priest in the Church of England), Harold Pinter (Nobel Prize-winning English playwright, screenwriter, director and actor), Helen Shapiro (singer and actress), Jessica Tandy (stage and film actress).
