Local Leyton Info

Leyton area E10 is located 6.2 miles north east of Charing Cross and is included in the London Borough of Waltham Forest. Its western boundary is formed by the river Lea and this is the reason why the name of the area means “settlement on the river Lea” in Anglo-Saxon.

Fossil bones and implements show that in the area were located human settlements and these lands were used as a hunting area during the Paleolithic Age. An old cemetery and remains of a Roman Villa show that Romans also settled here. In Anglo-Saxon times Leyton was included in the Country of Essex. In Domesday Book (1086) “Leintun” was mentioned as a settlement with 43 residents. The oldest local church is St Mary the Virgin, which was rebuilt in the 17th century.

An ancient route to Waltham Abbey passed through Leyton and the present High Road is practically a part of it. At its two opposite ends are located two big shopping areas. The Leyton’s architecture is mix of terraced houses, built between 1870 and 1910 and housing estates from present time.

Like most of the East London areas Leyton is a cosmopolitan and multi-cultural district with different ethnic communities and residents from different parts of the world: South Africa, Nigeria, Jamaica, Ghana, North Africa, Italy, Russia, Ireland, Cyprus, Bosnia, Serbia and Poland.

Metropolitan Police determined Leyton as high crime area (especially the part between High Road and Temple Mills). But here live or lived also famous people like Redzz (rapper, singer, producer and actor), Molly Cutpurse (author), Daniel Evans (singer; X Factor finalist), Curtis Davies (Premiership footballer), Frank Muir (writer and radio personality), Russ Sainty (1960s rock’n’roll star), John Strype (historian and biographer), Jamie Kyriakides (drummer and singer of The Skints) etc.

In 1975 here was founded the famous rock band Iron Maiden, which bass player Steve Harris was also a local resident.
