Local Hackney Info

Hackney E8 is an East London area, situated in the London Borough of Hackney and also located near the very heart of London.

The area was once a rural one, known as Hackney Village. Its development began mostly during the Tudor period, because some of the houses of a couple of principal members of the Court were built there. It is also known that King Henry VIII had a palace in the surrounding area, which made it even more famous among the settlements around it. Until the Georgian era Hackney also became famous as one of the most popular resorts for the London citizens.

Later, many immigrants found their home in Hackney, making it a culturally vibrant part of inner London. The area underwent some changes in its Victorian period and it became a firmly urban area.

There are some places of interest in Hackney that both local people and visitors of the area like visiting. One of them is Hackney Empire music hall, which is a Grade II building. It is known also for the fact that Charles Chaplin and Marie Lloyd appeared on its stage in the past. There is also one more building that is listed in the Grade II – the Hackney Town Hall in Portland Stone. Today there is a new town hall complex that is being constructed behind the already existing one.

Surrounded by most local landmarks, Hackney Town Hall Square has been always considered to be a “cultural quarter”. In is actually completed as such by the 2002 Learning and Technology Centre, which is home to Hackney Central Library, Hackney Archive, the local museum and the offices of the Hackney Learning Trust.

There are some world-famous celebrities that have been associated with Hackney because they have been its residents through the years. Some of them are: Adrian Smith, Mark Bolan, Michael Caine, Alfred Hitchcock, Leona Lewis, and Jessica Tandy.
