Local Islington Info

One of London’s most exclusive office and residential areas, Islington is located in the very centre of the city. Though modern looking today, Islington was already a focal transport junction for the Romans with the great northern road to the Hadrian Wall passing through. The oldest structure in North London- the gothic tower of the St Marry Church, built in the end of the 12th century, still remains proudly erect at Church Street.

Another imposing building in Islington is the Royal Agricultural Hall- for more than fifty years it was the largest exhibition building in London.

One of the capital’s most vibrant and best known shopping streets is the Islington Angel. Originally it was one of the biggest inns in London, first recorded in 1665. Later it gave its name to the whole adjacent area.

The appeal of the neighbourhood has attracted some of the country’s biggest celebrities to choose it as their home. Pop sensations Dido, Alexandra Burke and Lilly Allen, movie stars Colin Firth and Neve Campbell as well as former Prime Minister Tony Blair all live in Islington. Douglas Addams also recognized the unique atmosphere of the place and incorporated it in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
