Local Bishopsgate Info

Situated in the centre of London, Bishopsgate is one of the most prominent business and office areas in the capital. Ironically, the area has just forty-eight permanent residents, but accommodates almost fifty thousand people, working in some of the city’s most imposing skyscrapers. Before the opening of the Shard, Heron Tower was London’s tallest building, overlooking other giants like 99 Bishopsgate and Tower 42.

The name of the area is derived from one of the seven gates of the Wall of London which gave the beginning of the great Roman road northwards. The gate was rebuilt and enlarged in the 15th century by the Hansa traders as a sign of gratitude for the granted trading rights with London. Today the remnants of it face the modern Heron Tower.

The proximity of the City and the financial heart of London explains the fact that some of the biggest bank institutions in England- The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the Royal Bank of Scotland- are all located in Bishopsgate.
