Local Strand & Covent Garden Info

Strand & Covent Garden WC2 is an area in Central West London. It is popular with its literary life and the many writers and thinkers that lived there – Thomas Carlyle, Charles Dickens, William Makepeace Thackeray, John Stuart Mill.

Strand represents a street long just about three-quarters of a mile. It has been used as a road through the Roman period. It carried the names Iter Vill and Akeman Street. Through the Middle Ages it represented the main road between the City of London and the Royal Palace of Westminster.

Many buildings have lined up the Strand through the years with a count of them even dating back to the 12th century. Some of them include the Essex House, Somerset House, Savoy Palace, Salisbury House, York House, Wimbledon House etc. Walking down the Strand, you can’t help but notice the church of St Clement Danes, St Mary-le-Strand and the Essex Street Chapel.

Although many theatres were lost through the years, you can still enjoy the Adephi Theatre, the Savoy Theatre and Vaudeville Theatre.

The Strand is also worldwide known as one of the most expensive streets in the Monopoly game.

Covent Garden is associated with the former vegetable and fruit market in the central square that is now a very popular shopping and tourist centre. What can capture your attention is also the Royal Opera House, which is also known as the “Covent Garden”.

You can see the large Apple Store in the world, just on The Piazza. On this square you can entertain yourself with the shops, cafes, bars, the Apple Market and the Jubilee Hall Market just on the south side.

Covent Garden offers you some interesting places to visit such as the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden Square, Covent Garden Market, the Theatre Royal and London Transport Museum. You can also enjoy the street performances at Covent Garden Market that are happening every single day, except Christmas Day.

This is truly an area that is going to capture your attention and will leave you with the best impression possible.
