Local Greenwich Info
One of the most important historical areas of London, Greenwich is situated in the south-eastern part of the capital. It has given its name to the Greenwich Meridian and is possibly the most noticeable place worldwide when it comes to time-measuring and geography.
The area was possibly populated as early as the Iron Age and the Roman road from London to Dover passed close by. In 1012 the Danish made camp just off Greenwich and attacked Kent and the city of Canterbury, pillaging it and taking the archbishop as prisoner.
Since 1082 Greenwich was seized by the crown and ever since known as Royal Greenwich. During the 15th century the marvellous Placentia Palace was built at the place of the Royal Observatory. The greatest Tudor monarchs- Henry VIII and Elizabeth I were born there. From then on Greenwich Palace has been one of the most favourite residences of the royal dynasties, ruling in England.
The area is closely related to the maritime history of Britain- the Royal Naval College was accommodated in Greenwich from 1873 to 1998. The National Maritime Museum is also located here. On the riverside, one of the most famous British clippers- Cutty Sark- stands on dry dock.
The magnificent O2 arena, the second largest indoor venue in Europe is also located in Greenwich. It has staged performances by Bon Jovi and Tom Jones, the X-factor Show, and the ATP World Tour Finals.
