Local Deptford  Info

Deptford is a district in Greater London with lusty atmosphere and rich history. The area is mostly connected with Henry VIII and more specific with the Royal Naval Dockyard he built. Hence the docks provided more jobs for any work connected with ship building and steering. One of the most popular Deptford’s landmarks is the Deptford railway station. It is considered to be one of the oldest suburban stations in the world.

The area’s streets, including the Deptford High Street, have quite interesting story. Their history is written down through maps. The first track leads to Charles Booth- a social researcher who started colouring every street in the city. Each colour referred to a code. Dark blue was for “chronic want”, pink was for “fairly comfortable”, black- “semi- criminal and vicious”, red- “middle class and well-to-do”, etc. Deptford High Street was mainly red, marked with a little pink and blue- black in the middle.

Some of the local sights are the grant houses of Sayes Court, Stone House, Aragon Tower, Deptford Market considered to be one of the liveliest street markets in London, the Albany Theatre, the Art Perpetuity Trust gallery and studio space, Cockpit Arts, Deptford Lounge. Also parks like Brookmill Park, Deptford Park, Sayes Court Part, Pepys Park and Ferranti Park.

Some of the famous personalities that are related to Deptford are: Christopher Marlowe (the Elizabethan poet), Samuel Pepys (17th century diarist), Grinling Gibbons (famous woodcarver), and John Penn II (marine engineer), even the Tsar of Russia- Peter the Great, came here for a couple of months to study shipbuilding.
