Local Brockley Info

Brockley SE4 is a London area, located in the southern part of the British capital, 5 miles of Charing Cross.

The area had an agricultural character until the 19th century, when it slightly turned into an urban district. Industrial development was stimulated in 1809, by the building of the Croydon Canal (in the second half of the century the canal was filled in and replaced by the London & Croydon railway).

The oldest house in Brockley is the ‘Stone House’, built in 1773. One of the most notable buildings of the beginning of 19th century is the ‘Brockley Jack’, which was erected as a public house and today houses the Brockley Jack Theatre. The theatre now presents many new plays and is the home of the Brockley Jack Film Club.

The present Rivoli Ballroom was built as a cinema in 1913 and was converted into a dance hall in 1951. It has outstanding interior, which was often used in films and videos.

Other old houses in Brockley are the shops and cottages on Coulgate Street, which date from 1830s. During the whole 19th century and the beginning of 20th century many large Victorian houses, villas, terraces and semi-detached houses were built in the area. The place became a fashionable district for wealthy south London residents. Here lived many factory owners and managers.

Brockley contains several fine churches: St Mary Magdalen’s RC Church (1901), St Peter’s (1870), St Andrews (1882), St Hilda’s (1908).

Today much of the original architecture of Brockley is saved. This is one of the best preserved Victorian suburbs in Inner London, which includes various examples of 19th century architecture.

After the World War I and the World War II the area was left by many of its wealthy residents. Most of the big houses were sub-divided. Since the 1950s in Brockley began the settlement of new inhabitants from distant parts of the world like African-Caribbean region and Asia.

Another new wave of settlers began in the mid-1960s. These were different bohemians like artists and musicians. They were attracted by the large, neglected and still cheap Victorian houses and by the close proximity to Camberwell School of Art and Goldsmiths College. The area became a famous artistic venue. It still offers interesting cultural events and festivals.

Brockley contains also some green open spaces like Blythe Hill, Hilly Fields, the New Cross Gate Cutting Nature Reserve and Brockley and Ladywell Cemeteries.

Here lived or live many famous people, some of which are poets (like Alan Brownjohn), actors (Bernard Hill, David Jones), artists (Paul Drury, Alan King, Anita Klein), musicians (like Kate Bush and Gabrielle), people of fashion industry (John Galliano) etc.
