Local Poplar Info

Situated in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, Poplar E14 is an east London area. It is mainly residential, but it also has rich historical background.

In the past the area was a hamlet in the parish of Stepney, Middlesex and then, in 1817 Poplar became a civil parish. Poplar is famous for its specific and memorable architecture, which is a mixture of 18^th and 19^th century terraced houses and 20^th century council estates. Its proximity to Canary Wharf and Shoreditch and Brick Lane makes it even more flourishing and desired as a place of residence.

Poplar is also connected with London’s docks, containing several Seamen’s Mission buildings. London’s docks gave employment to the area for many years, which is also one of the reasons because of which Poplar is associated with them. Some of the old buildings, which were working men’s clubs, are now converted into apartments. Also some notable buildings that survived the wartime bombings have also been converted into apartments.
