Local Willesden Info

Willesden NW10 is an area in the north-western part of London, 5 miles away from Charing Cross.

Willesden might derive from the Anglo-Saxon Willesdune, meaning The Hill of the Spring. The name of the area was mentioned as Wellesdone in Domesday Book of 1086. The place was famous among pilgrims who came to see two ancient statues of the Virgin Mary at the Church of St Mary between 14th and 16th. Later one of the statues was considered to be a Black Madonna, which Lollards taught to be insulting. The statue was burned on a big balefire in the house of Thomas Cromwell . In the district there was also a “holly well”, which people believed to have miraculous qualities, including for some eye disorders.

Until the second half of 19th century the area was predominantly rural. The Metropolitan Railway station of Willesden Green was opened on 24 November 1879 and only 27 years later in 1906 the population increased to 140,000.

After the end of the World War I Willesden expanded very fast because of the foundation of many factories. Willesden is one of the most multicultural areas in England to the present day. In the early 20th century only 42% of the local population was born in London.

In 1933 Willesden became a municipal borough. By this time in the area was formed a small Irish community, which increased very fast during the Second World War. At that time in Willesden came people born in Germany, Russia, Poland and Austria mainly Jewish refugees. Germans bombed Willesden several times aiming the railways in the area and the concentrated industry there.

In 1960s to Willesden came also many Caribbean and Indian immigrants.

Willesden was the place, where in 1963 was opened the first Chinese restaurant which served Pekinese dishes in Britain – the Kuo Yuan.

In 1970s and 1980s Willesden had a period of regression, because of overcrowding and inadequate housing strategy, but in the late 1980 the area came into a new period of development. Now it is one of the fast growing areas with increasing estate prices.
