A short humorous poem from 15th century, called Tournament of Tottenham, tells about the visitors of a drinking fest in Tottenham. In Isaac Walton’s book The Compleat Angler from 16th century Tottenham was described as a district with large Quaker population and many schools. Since the Tudor period Tottenham became a favourite leisure destination for wealthy Londoners. King Henry VIII often visited Bruce Castle and hunted in Tottenham Wood. But in the second half of 19th century Tottenham became a cheap housing area for workers of the Great Eastern Railway. Five railways we built in the area at that time. After the Second World War to Tottenham’s population became one of the most cosmopolitan in London: Ghanaians, Somali, Congolese, Portuguese, Irish, Albanian, Kurdish, Turkish, Colombians moved to live there. Today South Tottenham is the most multicultural area in Europe.
