Local Poplar Info

Poplar E14 is located in East London, 8.9 km (5.5 miles) of Charing Cross. It is part of London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

Poplar’s architecture is a mixture of two periods. 18th and 19th century terraced houses are placed next to council estates from 20th century. The Lansbury Estate is one of the public housing estates from the previous century. It was built in an area damaged by bombing in Word War II (to the north of East India Dock Road). The construction began in 1949 was finally finished in 1982. The place is named after George Lansbury, a Poplar councillor and Labour party leader. In 1921 here was the leader of Poplar Rates Rebellion.

Poplar Workhouse is a place, related to other local politician – there lived Will Crooks, social reformer and the first Labour Mayor in London. The nearby housing estate is named after him.

Other 20th century notable buildings are Robin Hood Gardens housing complex (by architects Peter and Alison Smithson) and the designed by Erno Goldfinger buildings  Glenkerry House, Carradale House and Balfron Tower. The Tower is a housing block in specific brutalist style and it is 84 metres high 27-storey and contains 146 homes.

Chrisp Street Market is the centre of the district. It was designed by Frederick Gibberd and built in 1951 for the Festival of Britain. It is in the eastern edge of the Lansbury Estate and it was the first especially built pedestrian shopping area in Britain. There are gathered cafes, shops, market stalls, apartments, small retail outlets and a clock tower.

Next to Poplar Town Hall and Poplar Bowls Club on Poplar High Street is St Matthias Old Church, one of the oldest buildings in the area. It was erected in 17th century first as a Poplar Chapel.

Except the politicians George Lansbury and Will Crooks here lived also other notable people: H. M. , Neil Banfield (coach of Arsenal F. C.), Harry Redknapp (former manager of West Ham United, Southampton, Bournemouth, Portsmouth and Tottenham Hotspur football clubs), Angela Lansbury (Hollywood actress), Tomlinson (travel-writer and journalist), Tommy Flowers (designer of the first programmable electronic computer) etc.
