Local Streatham Info
Streatham is an area, located in South London. It is a district of the London Borough of Lambeth, situated 5 miles south of Charing Cross. The area is one of the major centres in Greater London, in the London Plan.
The ancient history of the area tells that the London to Brighton Way used to be the Roman road from the capital Londinium to the coast near Portslade. Just form here originates the name of Streatham, which meaning is “the hamlet on the street”.
The main road running through the area remained an important track way after the departure of the Romans. It even became the basis for the modern A23. Therefore we can say that this road has helped the developments of Streatham.
An interesting place in Streatham is St Leonard’s church, which is the first church in Streatham. In the present church has remained only the medieval tower, but the church dates back to Saxon times.
The area remained untouched until the 18th century, when the Streatham Wells in the village became celebrated for their health-improving powers. Then a lot of merchants and other wealthy citizens of the City of London came to the area because of the reputation of the spa and the improved turnpike roads. After this a large urbanization process started and today only few of the country residences are still present in Streatham.
If you want to spend an extraordinary day or just to enjoy the pure air in Streatham, while we are cleaning your windows, why don’t you visit the Streatham Park or the large house of Park Hill?
