Local Eltham Info

Eltham SE9 is an area of south London, Royal Borough of Greenwich. It is located 8.6 miles (13.8 km) of Charing Cross. The area is one of 35 major centres pointed in the London Plan.

Eltham is situated on a high plateau. This strategic position and the closeness of the main route to the English Channel ports in Kent made Eltham an important settlement, where the moated Plantagenet Eltham Palace was built.

The village outside the Palace remained rural until the Eltham Park Estate was bought by Archibald Cameron Corbett, who developed it with suburban housing in the early 20th century.

Suburban development of the district was stimulated when His Majesty’s Office of Works built the Progress Estate in the area and large estates of temporary hutments (1915) for the wartime workers in the Royal Arsenal.

By the beginning of the Second World War were built the Page Estate (1923), Middle Park (1930s), and Horn Park (built from 1930s to 1950s). In 1940s was built Coldharbour Estate.

Eltham offers variety of green open spaces. Avery Hill Park is large parkland. It has a great Winter Garden with tropical trees and plants from different parts of the world.

Oxleas Woods, Jack Wood and Castle Wood are pointed as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. In the woods grow many trees: oak, silver birch, hornbeam and coppice hazel. Severndroog Castle (1784) is located in Castle Wood.

Other local parks are Sutcliffe Park, Well Hall Pleasaunce, Eltham Park North and Eltham Park South.

The local population is almost 88,000 people. A census in January 2012 showed that black and minority ethnic people made up about a third of it.

Today Eltham has a newly rebuilt town centre, which includes council offices, a new swimming pool and the early 20th century library. There are also nice places for shopping, dining, and having a drink, but the nightlife is modest.

In the area are located many primary schools (Alderwood, Christ Church, Deansfield, Middle Park, Ealdham, Eltham C of E, Holy Family, Kidbrooke Park, Gordon, Haimo, Henwick etc.). Local secondary schools include Crown Woods School, The Eltham Foundation School, Eltham Hill Technology College for Girls and St Thomas More. In Avery Hill Park is situated one campus of the University of Greenwich.

Among the famous local residents are John Arnold (Internationally renowned watchmaker), princess Bridget of York, seventh daughter of Edward IV, Kate Bush (singer), Boy George (singer), Bob Hope (actor), John of Eltham (Earl of Cornwall and Prince of England), Jude Law (actor) etc.
