Local Blackheath Info

Blackheath SE3 is a suburb of South East London, located in the London Borough of Lewisham.

The name of the area was first mentioned in historic sources in 1166, as Blachehedfeld. It means “dark coloured heathland”. There are also some suggestions that the name of Blackheath is associated with the Black Death of the mid-14th century or with Plague from 1665, when Blackheath was used as a burial pit.

Blackheath was also related to some riots: Wat Tyler’s Peasants’ Revolt  in 1381, and for Jack Cade’s Kentish rebellion in 1450. In the Battle of Blackheath (or the Battle of Deptford Bridge) Cornish rebels were defeated in 1497. During the 17th and 18th centuries the place was also associated with highwaymen, operating there.

Today the area has many green spaces and interesting old buildings. The Vanbrugh Pits is a very attractive and beautiful part of Blackheath. It is named after the architect Sir John Vanbrugh, whose old house is now in Greenwich Park area and is called Vanbrugh Castle.

Blackheath Park is a large area, created on the lands of Wricklemarsh Manor by John Cator. The manor, built in the late 18th and early 19th centuries contains fine examples of Georgian and Victorian houses.

Some notable buildings also are located in the Cator Estate, which contains the Morden College (1695) and some innovative 1960s ‘Span’ houses (architect Eric Lyons). In Vanburgh Park are the Blackheath High School and the Church Army Chapel (1965).

Interesting local places are also the St Michael Church and All Angels Church, designed in 19th century.

The development of local music art is stimulated by the Blackheath Conservatoire of Music and the Arts and Blackheath Halls, a popular concert venue, managed by Trinity College of Music.

One of the most popular local events is the annual fireworks display on the occasion of Guy Fawkes Night. Every year over forty thousand spectators come to watch the show.

Blackheath has an interesting sports history. In 1608 Blackheath was the first place in England, where was played golf. The Royal Blackheath Golf Club (1766) is one of the first golf associations outside Scotland.

In the area was founded the Blackheath Rugby Club (1858), the oldest rugby club in England. The club organised the first in the world rugby international (between England and Scotland in 1871).

Blackheath also took part in the foundation of the Football Association in 1863 and was one of its 12 members. The first hockey club was established in the mid-19th century in the district too.

Cricket used to be played here since 1820s and kite flying has also long history in the area.
