Local Mortlake Info
A calm residential area on the banks of the River Thames, Mortlake is situated in the south-western part of London. During the early Mediaeval age it belonged to the Archbishop of Canterbury, as the Domesday Book states. King Henry VIII took possession of Mortlake while reforming the Church in the 16th century. It was at this time that the area became an important brewing centre, a fame it holds till present day. One of the largest working breweries in London today- The Budweiser Stag Brewery- is located in Mortlake.
The area is probably best known as the finishing point of the legendary Championship Race- the titanic struggle between the boats of Cambridge and Oxford. It has served this glorious purpose ever since 1845. The Boat Race Stone can be seen downriver, close to the Chiswick Bridge.
Mortlake is also home to a number of museums, the most interesting of them The World Rugby Museum and the National Archives.
