Local Highgate Info

Situated on the north-eastern corner of Hampstead Heath, Highgate N6 is one of the areas in the north part of London. Combined with the key location of the place, the great living conditions make Highgate one of the most-desired and flourishing residential areas in London, but also one of the most expensive ones.

Highgate has ancient history and until late Victorian times it was just a distinct village outside London. It adjoined the Bishops of London’s hunting estate and some pubs were built nearby, which made the place a desired destination. Nowadays it is mainly residential area with some great parks and green areas, including the eastern part of Hampstead heath, Waterlow Park and some ancient woods.

The architectural look of the area cannot be left unnoticed because of the magnificent Gregorian style of some house and shops, which make it unique and memorable. In the area you can find a lot of restaurants, cafes, traditional pubs and residential streets as well as different local landmarks. Some of the places of interest that you can go and see are St Michael’s Church, Highgate School, Jacksons Lane arts centre, the Gatehouse inn and Berthold Lubetkin’s Highpoint buildings.

Another place that contributes for the specific atmosphere of the area is Highgate Cemetery, which is located on both sides of Swain’s Lane, next to Waterlow Park. It is the burial place of many famous people. Some of them are: Karl Marx, Michael Faraday, Douglas Adams, George Eliot, Jacob Bronowski, Sir Ralph Richardson, and Christina Rossetti.

The area is also associated with some celebrities such as Tariq Ali, Stanley Baxter, Arthur Boyd, Stella Gibbons, Terry Gilliam, Jeremy Hardy, Bob Hoskins, Imre Varadi, RodStewart, George Michael, Kate Moss, Christopher Nolan, Clive Owen and many others.
