Local Hampstead Info

One of the most fashionable residential areas to live in, home to more millionaires than any other neighbourhood in England, Hampstead is located in the north-western part of London. The village is separated from its neighbours by the Hampstead Heath, the oldest natural open space remaining in London.

The name is first mentioned in a charter issued by King Ethelred the Unready during the 10th century, granting it to the Monastery of St. Peter’s at Westminster. During the 1860s the predominantly rural look of Hampstead was dramatically changed by the building of the North Railway road. As a result, there was a momentous growth in both population and housing. In 1907 the Hampstead tube station was opened, and it still remains the deepest point of the London underground system.

The area’s cultural importance is highlighted by the presence of a number of museums like the Freud Museum, the Keats House and the Fenton House. Hampstead was chosen to be the setting for a number of movies like Notting Hill and Four Weddings and a Funeral.

It is also famous for its high quality restaurants, featuring cuisine from all around the world. Places like Tip Top Thai, Crimea Jewel, La Gaffe and Gaucho Grill are well known all around London.

Hampstead has been preferred as a place of residence by some of the country’s most famous people. Some of Britain’s greatest actors of all time live here, including Jeremy Irons, Peter O’Toole, and Judy Dench, alongside legends of rock music like Sting, Slash and Ozzy Osbourne.
