Local Barnes Info

Highlighted by the famous Terrace with some of the most imposing Georgian manors in London, Barnes is probably the most beautiful residential suburb in south-western London. Situated on the banks of the River Thames, the area is architecturally dominated by the large Victorian riverside mansions. The history of the neighbourhood goes even further back- to the Saxon age and the Norman Conquest. Barnes was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086.

Barnes has a huge influence on the contemporary British jazz and rock music. One of the oldest and most important jazz clubs in England- The Bulls Head- works till present day at Lonsdale Road.

Another great musical landmark of the area is the Olympic studios, where The Beatles recorded all the tracks for All You Need Is Love. Music stars like Pink Floyd, Queen, David Bowe, Jimmy Hendricks, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Ella Fitzgerald, Madonna and Coldplay have recorded here.

According to the historians of the game, football became an organized sport right here, in the area around Lonsdale Road. One of the founding members of the Football Association lived in Barnes during the second half of the 19th century.

Barnes was home to two of the founding members of The Queen- Brian May and Freddie Mercury, as well as composer Gustav Holst. The Twilight saga star and teen idol Robert Pattinson also lives here.
