Local Peckham Info

The area of Peckham SE15 is located in South London, England, 3.5 miles (5.6 km) of Charing Cross. The area is one of 35 major centres of Greater London, identified in the London Plan.

Archaeological evidence show that in the area was located Roman settlement, but its name is lost.

Peckham appears in 1086 in Domesday Book as Pecheham. It was domain of the Bishop of Lisieux and had 1 plough, 2 acres (8,100 m2) of meadow and rendered £1 10s 0d (£1.50). The manor was owned by King Henry I and he gave it to his son Robert, Earl of Gloucester. Robert united the manor of Peckham with the manor of Camberwell, which was owned by his wife. Later King John came in the local woods for hunting.

Until the 19th century Peckham was still a small village. But it was popular as a wealthy residential area. It was also a commercial centre, attractive for industrialists, wanting to avoid the expensive rents in central London. The place was the last stop on the way to London of many cattle drovers taking their livestock for sale. Peckham had extensive market gardens and orchards too. They produced fruits and vegetables for the nearby markets, including melons, grapes and figs.

Today the oldest surviving house in the district is 2 Wood’s Road, built in 1690.

During the 19th century the area rapidly developed. A branch of the Grand Surrey Canal was built from Surrey Commercial Docks to Peckham. Since 1851 Thomas Tilling offered an innovative omnibus service between Peckham and London. The local railway station, Peckham Rye, was opened in 1865.

New settlers – artisans and clerical staff working at the docks and the City came to the area. Much of the remaining free spaces were built. Only the Rye and the adjacent farm were saved and were turned into the Peckham Rye Park in 1894.

Until the second half of 20th century the population of the area increased and many immigrants settled here: African, Caribbean, Chinese, South Asian, Irish etc.

In the end of the century the area became a centre of the underground music and a popular local music venue was the Dole House.

Unfortunately it was also a place with many crimes. Urban decay, vandalism, arson attacks, robberies and muggings were not rare incidents in Peckham. That’s why a large redevelopment program was realised in the late 20th century and the early 21st century.

In the beginning of 21st century the European Union invested heavily in the area’s regeneration. The futuristic Peckham Library is an architecture awards winner. The town square was renewed and number of buildings replaced the old housing. Public arts projects were also stimulated like the Tom Phillips wall mosaics on the Peckham Experiment restaurant and the South London Gallery.
