Local Highgate Info

Highgate N6 is one of the most fashionable, attractive and expensive suburbs in Great Britain’s capital. In the past centuries it was a village outside London at the main road to the north. The place was adjoined to the hunting estate of London’s Bishop. Nowadays there are still wide green areas in Highgate. Highgate Wood spreads over an area of 28 hectare and it is part of Middlesex forest, which in the 11th century covered much of London, Hertfordshire and Essex. Highgate is located on one of the highest London hills (446 feet).

The centre of the district is known as Highgate village. To protect the unique character of the area, here was founded Highgate Society. Today there are many Gregorian restaurants, pubs, shops and residential buildings. There are also interesting historical landmarks: St Michael’s Church and steeple (where was buried Samuel Taylor Coleridge), Jacksons Lane arts centre (housed in a transformed red-brick gothic church), Highgate School (from 16th century), Berthold Lubetkin’s 1930 Highpoint buildings, Kenwood House (17th century) and Athlone House (19th century). It may sound strange, but probably the most famous place in Highgate is its cemetery. There are about 170,000 people buried in around 53,000 graves, and some of them are: Michael Faraday, Karl Marx, Douglas Adams, George Eliot, Alexander Litvinenko., Jacob Bronowski, Sir Ralph Richardson.

Of course, there also many famous people alive in Highgate. This beautiful place attracts citizens like George Michael, Geri Halliwell, Freddie Highmore, Bob Hoskins, Julian Barratt, Andy Bell, Sir Jacob Bronowski, Sir Clifford Curzon, Stella Gibbons, Terry Gilliam, Sting, Ewan Mcgregor, Kate Moss, Chris Moyles, Paul Nicholas, Rod Stewart, Imre Varadi, Christopher Nolan, Clive Owen, Lord Young of Dartington.
