Local Brockley Info

Brockley SE4 is situated in south London, 5 miles (8 km) south-east of Charing Cross.

For long time the area of Brockley had agricultural character, but in 19th century it turned into an urban district. Industrial development in the district was stimulated by the Croydon Canal, which arrived to Brockley in 1809. In the second half of the century the canal was filled in and was replaced by the London & Croydon railway (opened in 1871).

The area is one of the best preserved London suburbs with interesting architecture and buildings in different styles.

The oldest surviving house is the ‘Stone House’ on Lewisham Way, built in 1773. From the beginning of 19th century is the notable building of the ‘Brockley Jack’ public house which now houses the Brockley Jack Theatre. Other beautiful old houses are located on Coulgate Street. These cottages and shops are believed to date from 1833. During the nineteenth century were erected many grand villas, large terraces and semi-detached houses. Brockley became home of many wealthy people and owners of factories in neighbouring industrial areas (as Deptford and Bermondsey).

The present Rivoli Ballroom was opened in 1913 as a cinema. It was later remodeled as a dance hall.

During the 19th and the early 20th century were built also some churches: St Peter’s (1870), St Andrews (1882), St Mary Magdalen’s RC Church (1901) and St Hilda’s (1908), which  was designed in the Arts and Crafts movement style.

After World War I the district began to lose its exclusivity and the wealthy residents relocated to the outer suburbs. The Belle Epoch houses were much more modest.

After the Second World War, many big houses were sub-divided. During the 1950s began the settlement of immigrants from African-Caribbean region, Asia and different parts of Europe. During the 1960s began settlement of other type of new residents too: ‘bohemian’ influx of artists and musicians. They were attracted by the large neglected and at the time cheap Victorian houses. Nearby were also Goldsmiths College and Camberwell School of Art. Brockley became famous as an art venue.

Brockley is an area containing several green open spaces. Hilly Fields is the place where is located the old West Kent Grammar School (now Prendergast School) and the stone circle, a millennium project by a group of local artists, erected in 2000. Since 30 years in the park takes place the annual Hilly Fields Midsummer Fayre. Other green spaces are Blythe Hill, Brockley and Ladywell Cemeteries (opened in 1858) and the New Cross Gate Cutting Nature Reserve.

In Brockley lived famous people like the guitarist Steve Bolton, the singer Kate Bush, the musician John Cale, the singer Gabrielle, the fashion designer John Galliano, the actor Bernard Hill and many others.
