Local Bermondsey Info
Bermondsey SE1 is an area located in Southern London, a part of the London Borough of Southpark.
The name Bermondsey probably originates from Old English personal name Beornmund and “eg” (“island”, “piece of firm land in a fen” or “place by a stream or river”). Bermondsey wasn’t a real island in the Anglo-Saxon period, but a higher, drier place in dominantly marshy area. The earliest appearance of name Bermondsey is in Domesday Book of 1086. The monks from Bermondsey Abbey were the first who developed the area, farming the land and did embankment works at the riverside. The Knights Templar also had land here. In 1353 King Edward III built a manor house in Bermondsey. After the Great Fire of London in 1666 Bermondsey was settled by wealthy people. It took on the role of a garden suburb. One of the buildings from this period, survived until now is St Mary Magdalene (1690) at Bermondsey Street.
The discovering of a spring from the river Neckinger turned the district into a relaxation resort. The population of Bermondsey grew up and was built a new church St John Horsleydown. With the arriving of the industrial plants, immigrant housing and docks by the middle of the 19th century some areas of Bermondsey like the riverside turned into slums.
One of the worst not only in Bermondsey, but in Bigger London was around St Saviour’s Dock, known as Jackob’s Island, which was described by Charles Dickens in his novel Oliver Twist.
In the beginning of the 20th century Bermondsey became a fast developing place because of the increasing of the railways and progress of the river trade. Here we situated some industries perceived to be too noisome for the City of London. Now the Bermondsey landscape is a mixture of commercial and residential accommodations with some of the most expensive properties in London.
The London Dungeon (opened in 1974) is a popular tourist attraction recreating scary and bloody historical events in ‘gallows humour’ style. It uses different special effects, rides and live actors.
The Fashion and Textiles Museum, founded in 2003 by the designer Zandra Rhodes, is housed in a redeveloped and redesigned. The building is coloured in burnt orange, hot pink, yellow and blue.
But the most impressive attraction in the area is the Tower Bridge. It was built for 8 years in the end of 19th century as a combined bascule and suspension bridge in order to give access to big ships. Today it is crossed by 40000 people daily.
