Local Poplar Info

Poplar is an East London district, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. It was a village in the parish of Stepney, Middlesex, which in 1817 became a civil parish.

In 1921 here took place Poplar Rates Rebellion, led by the Mayor, George Lansbury. He was later elected as leader of the Labour Party. A council housing estate in Poplar is named after him. The Lansbury Estate includes the area between Limehouse Cut, East India Dock Road and Docklands Light Railway. It was an area, very damaged by bombing in Second World War. The building started in 1949 and was finished in 1982.

Many other housing complexes were built in the middle of 20th century too. The Robin Hood Gardens complex was designed by Alison and Peter Smithson. The Carradale House, Glenkerry House and Balfron Tower were designed by famous architect Erno Goldfinger. The Balford Tower with its 84 metres, 27 stores and 146 homes was built between 1965 and 1967.

Next to these council estates from 20th century are neighbouring  18th and 19th century terraced houses.

A lively place for shopping and meetings is Chrisp Street Market. It was built for the Festival of Britain in 1951 and was designed by Frederick Gibberd. At that time it was the first pedestrian shopping area in England, especially built for this purpose. There are located shops, cafes, market stalls, small retail outlets, apartments and a clock tower.

One of the oldest local buildings is St Matthias Old Church built in 17th century.

Poplar is home place of some interesting and famous people: Will Crooks (social reformer and first Labour Mayor in London), Tommy Flowers (designer of the first programmable electronic computer), H. M. Tomlinson (travel-writer and journalist), Angela Lansbury (Hollywood actress), Harry Redknapp (former manager of West Ham United, Portsmouth, Bournemouth, Southampton and Tottenham Hotspur football clubs), Neil Banfield (coach of Arsenal F. C.).
