Local Walworth Info
The district of Walworth SE17 is an inner-city area of London. It is part of the London Borough of Southwark and is situated 1.9 miles (3.1 km) south east of Charing Cross.
The name Walworth comes from the Old English word “Wealhworth” which means Welsh (British) farm.
In the Domesday Book of 1086 Walworth was mentioned as Waleorde. At that time Waleorde had one church, four ploughs, 32,000 m2 (8 acres) of meadow and rendered £3.
Trading was developing in the area of Walworth since the 16th Century. The farmers rested their livestock there before continuing to the city of London. At the time of the industrial revolution, stalls were installed along whole of the Walworth Road. But the market there is officially running since 1880. It is the East Street market, one of the major and liveliest street markets. Today it is known locally also as ‘The Lane’, or ‘East Lane’. There are offered any kinds of goods: clothing, household products, jewellery, cosmetics, confectionary, fruit and vegetables (including African and Caribbean ones). Sunday is the busiest day of the market and on Monday it is closed.
Among the local notable places is also St. Peter’s Church. It was erected in 1820s in the neo-classical style. Its architect was Sir John Soane. The buildings shows how wealthy were the middle-class merchants during that period, so that they could afford an architect of such class. The church includes the Monkey Park, which was originally a menagerie and now is a beautiful garden.
Manor Place Baths, a former wash house, is a grade II listed building. The place was renovated in 21st century by the KagyuSamye Dzong Tibetan Buddhist Centre to be their London centre.
In Walworth are located the Pullens buildings, some of the last saved Victorian tenement buildings. The flats are sharing communal roof terraces with views over to the West End.
The most world famous Walworth resident was Charlie Chaplin, who was born here in 1889. The area is place of birth also of actor Michael Caine. Here lived also the poet Robert Browning, the mathematician Charles Babbage (he originated the concept of a programmable computer), the comedian and musician Bill Bailey, the scientist Michael Faraday (discovered the electromagnetic induction, diamagnetism and electrolysis), painter Samuel Palmer etc.
