Local Richmond Info
Growing to be one of the prime business and residential areas of London, Richmond is situated on the bank of the River Thames in the south-western part of the capital. Today some of the country’s richest people live here, attracted by the multitude of shopping centres and restaurants.
Built in 1501 by King Henry VII, the glorious Richmond Castle gave its name to the whole adjacent area. Much earlier, in the 13th and 14th century kings like Henry I and Edward I often moved their courts to Richmond, seeking the calmness of its woods. The great Queen Elizabeth I also spent a lot of time in the Richmond Castle and died there in 1603. The area was scarcely populated until the middle of the 19th century, when great Victorian estates and riverside houses changed the face of Richmond for good.
Today the area can boast with some of London’s most beautiful parks. The most famous of them are Richmond Green and Richmond Hill, which was proclaimed a conservation area by a special Act of Parliament.
The Cricketers pub was opened in 1770 and it still works today, alongside some of the most famous pubs in the capital like The White Cross, The Richmond Arms, The Duke and The Old Ship, with its unique riverside atmosphere.
The Richmond inhabitants also have the chance to indulge in the high quality cuisine and peculiar spirit of restaurants like Tide Tables, Fish Works, La Buvette, Gaucho’s Restaurant and The Boat at Richmond Bridge.
The beauty of Richmond was recognized by many movie producers and was used in productions like Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows, The Hours, Evita, and the BBC production The Crimson Petal and the White.
Celebrities like Kylie Minogue, Robert Pattinson, Mick Jagger, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt and Anastacia all own property in the area. In the past intellectual giants like Bertrand Russel, Julia Maitland and Virginia Woolf graced Richmond with their presence.
