Local Clapton Info
The district of Clapton E5 is located in Eastern London, London Borough of Hackney. In the past its name was pronounced Clopton, which means “the farm on the hill” in Old English. In the 19th century manorial courts distinguished the areas south and north of Lea Bridge Road as Lower and Upper Clapton. Those names soon passed into general use.
In the end of 20th century and the beginning of 21st century the area was associated with gun and drug related crimes. The district was even called the “Murder Mile”.
But there are also many nice places to visit in Clapton. Springfield Park at the east shore of the river Lea is the biggest local green area, formed in 1905 from three mansions. After bombings in World War II only one of the three private houses still can be seen in the park – the Springfield House (known also as the White House), which houses a café and a municipal rangers station. Springfield Park is a nice place for walk and sport with its five tennis courts, football pitches, a cricket pitch and rugby fields. In the southeast of the park is located the Anchor and Hope pub, which is one of the few buildings in the area surviving after Second World War bombing.
Other green open areas are Clapton Park, Hackney Marshes and Millfields Park. Clapton Pond is a place where can be seen many kinds of birds: geese, swans, ducks, grebes, waders.
One of the most notable local buildings is the Church of the Good Shepherd, founded in 1895. It was built by the Agapemonites (they held unconventional views on marriage and on women’s role). This Gothic styled church shows a riot of statuary and symbolism. Its main doorways are decorated by large carvings of angels and four figures, symbolizing the four evangelists: a man, an eagle, a bull and a lion. The same four figures, in bronze, look out from the base of the steeple.
The Round Chapel was opened in 1871 as a Congregational church. It is one of the finest non-conformist buildings in British capital and is used as an arts centre now.
The New Synagogue (1915) is replica of the Great St Helen’s Synagogue, from 1838.
Clapton is ethnical diverse and multicultural area. Here are operating many shops and restaurants (especially on Chatsworth Road), offering Turkish, French, Asian, African and Caribbean goods.
