Local Abbey Wood Info
Abbey Wood SE2 is a South- East London’s area, located more in the Royal Borough of Greenwich and less in the London Borough of Bexley. The district took its name from the ancient forestry around Lesnes Abbey.
There used to be an abbey in this area known as Lesnes Abbey. Unfortunately it never had the chance to grow and become a large community because it was closed in 1525 by Cardinal Wolsey. Almost 300 years later the Abbey Wood railway station opened gates. During these years Abbey Wood was an area with a couple of cabins scattered around the station. Later the Royal Arsenal Co- operative society started a vas house development in Abbey Wood. During World War I the area’s population started growing rapidly.
Famous attraction in Abbey Wood is the Abbey Wood Gardens which look like a little gem hidden in the countryside. The Rowlinson family has lived at Abbey Wood since 1987 and it was exactly this family which gave birth to the beautiful gardens. The blooming period starts in February when you can witness many varieties of Galanthus in Jane’s Garden, followed by Erythroniums and Trilliums and others. The Main Garden is divided into separate areas. Early May welcomes you with Tulips followed by Alliums and Camassia. During September the Christopher Lloyd Exotic Garden, designed around the remnants of the old vegetable garden, is filled with Dahlias, Cannas, Banana and other breathtaking perennials. These continue until the first frosts. The Young Arboretum is planted with rare evergreen and leaf falling trees. There is also a lovely children’s play area – again in a natural wooded setting.
Some places of interest: Abbey Wood Library, Lesnes Abbey Woods, the ruins of Lesnes Abbey and the Local Nature Reserve, along with the Bostall Woods. You can go out for a walk in the Abbey Wood’s parks or sports areas like the Bostall Gardens where you can find tennis courts and a playground; Abbey Wood Park or the Bostall Health.
