Local Hackney Info

Hackney E8 is an area in East London and also part of the London Borough of Hackney, situated near the very heart of the capital of the United Kingdom.

Hackney was known as Hackney Village in the past and also as not so densely populated area, but after the rule of the Tudors, when some of the houses of a couple of principal members of the Court were built, its prosperity became greater. An interesting fact about the area is that King Henry VIII owned a palace in the surrounding area, which also made Hackney one of the most popular resorts for the London citizens until the end of the Georgian era.

Later, when its Georgian period was over, many immigrants coming not only from abroad, but also from the United Kingdom, found their home in the area, which made it a culturally vibrant part of inner London. The area began to be built up and it transformed from a rural suburb to firmly urban.

Hackney residents and visitors may find it interesting to visit some of the local landmarks. Did you know that there are two buildings that are listed in the Grade II – the Hackney Town Hall in Portland Stone and Hackney Empire music hall? After the old Town Hall now there is a new one and a lot of world-famous people such as Charles Chaplin and Marie Lloyd appeared on the stage of Hackney Empire music hall.

Surrounded by all these landmarks and also by the 2002 Learning and Technology Centre, which houses the new Hackney Central Library, the Hackney Archive, the local museum and the offices of the Hackney Learning Trust, Hackney Town Hall has been always considered to be a “cultural quarter”.

Some of the past and present residents of the area are: Adrian Smith, Mark Bolan, Michael Caine, Alfred Hitchcock, Leona Lewis, Jessica Tandy and many others.
