Local Blackheath Info

Blackheath is an area in London which is named after the vast meadowland which separates the suburb from Greenwich and Lewisham. In the past the suburb was called Blacheledfeld which means “dark coloured heathland” or “dark soil”. The other story for the origin of the name is really popular urban myth, but incorrect- some say that it derives from the fact that the district was used for a mass burial pit for the victims of the Black Death during the 1340s.

The area was with really important strategic meaning because of its position- an opened, high ground area. The Romans first built a road there called Watling Street, now known as the A2. Since then Blackheath has hosted military camps, rebel gatherings, royal meetings, sports, even religious festivals, fairs and circuses.

Today you can enjoy the sight of many Georgian and Victorian houses situated in the Blackheath Park. Examples are the Paragon, the Cator Estate where you can see “Span” houses from 1960s, Michael’s Searles’ crescent of half-separated terrace houses connected by atriums. Also the Church Army Chapel which is situated at Vanburgh Park.

If you are a fan of sports, you can visit the Blackheath Hockey Club and the Blackheath Rugby Club which are the oldest hockey and rugby clubs in the world. You can also try kite flying and kitebuggying which are really popular in Blackheath. You can take a look at the 1st Golf Club in England, too, which was founded at Blackheath by James I in 1608.

Some of the famous Blackheath residents are: Donald McGill, Emily Davison, Richard Branson, and others.
