Local Bermondsey Info

Bermondsey is a suburb of South London. It is important to note that the bigger part of the area is situated in Rotherhithe SE16 and only small part lies within Waterloo SE1.

Some assumed that Bermondsey was once an island because of the name of the area. It might be translated as “Beornmund’s island”. The element –ey” is the Old English –eg” which means “island” or “place by stream or river”. Hence it could have been a marshy area as well.

After the Great Fire of London, Bermondsey went through really important changes. It was populated by the wealthy circles of society and transformed into a garden area. One of the most famous and beautiful gardens is the Cherry Garden Pier. Later a spring from Neckinger River had been found and the area became a spa health resort.

There are a number of small art galleries in Bermondsey, along with quite big antique market where you can find several antique warehouses and shops. A very important parish church is St Magdalen’s church situated at Bermondsey Street, also Haddon Hall Baptist Church in Tower Bridge Road. You can also visit Bermondsey Street where you can find the Fashion and Textile Museum.

The area is considered to be popular with its property and residential buildings, so today the prices are relatively high. Some of the celebrity residents are the Chemical Brothers, Zandra Rhodes, and Jonathan Meades. Other former and still living notable residents are: Danny Murphy, David Haye, Madeline Duggan, Arthur Smith, R. F. Delderfield, Katie Chapman, Frederic Virtue,  Steve White, Dominic Shimmin, Andy Tutt, Julie Rogers, Mark Feltham, Devlin, Harold Glanville, and others.

If you want to visit some interesting places, here is a small list: St Mary Magdalen in Bermondsey Street, the Antiques Market, Tanner St Park & Tennis Courts, Leathermarket St Gardens, Borough Market, Southwark Cathedral, Potters Fields Park, The London Dungeon, etc.
