Local Barnes Info

Highlighted architecturally by some of the city’s most beautiful and best preserved Victorian and Georgian riverside mansion houses, Barnes is located on the banks of the River Thames in the south-western part of London. The area was already recorded in the Domesday Book, so the origins of the first settlement are probably Saxon.

Barnes can be described as one of the hearts of British music. Beatles recorded one of their most successful albums- All You Need Is Love- in the legendary Olympic studios. Other great names related to the studios are Eric Clapton, Ella Fitzgerald, Coldplay, Madonna, The Rolling Stones, Jimmy Hendricks, Queen, David Bowe and Pink Floyd.

But Barnes’s musical influence does not end here. Another legendary venue still works today- The Bull’s Head at Lonsdale Road, described by many as one of the greatest jazz clubs in England.

The area is also closely related to the history of football. Ebenezer Cobb Morley, one of the founding members of the Football Association, lived here during the second part of the 19^th century. At this very time, around Lonsdale Road football evolved from a rugby-like mob jolly to an organized sport with strict rules and referees.

Barnes was the home of two of Queen’s founding members, Brian May and Freddie Mercury and composer Gustav Holst. Today, rising star Robert Pattinson is possibly the area’s best known inhabitant.
