Local Tottenham Info
Tottenham N17 is a North London area. The name comes from the farmer Tota, whose hamlet Toteham was mentioned in the Domesday Book. First settlement in Tottenham dated back to over a thousand years. It grew up along the Ermine street and old Roman road. In 11th century about 70 families lived within this area.
Tottenham became a famous destination for wealthy Londoners during the Tudor period when King Henry VIII hunted in Tottenham Wood. Later in 1870s Tottenham lost its glory of a wealthy area. It became a cheap housing area for workers at the Great Eastern Railway. South Tottenham became the most multicultural area in Europe after the Second World War when many immigrants came to the area: African-Caribbean, Ghanaians, Somali, Congolese, Irish, Portuguese, Albanian, Kurdish, Turkish and Colombians. As a result of this migration it became an area with up to 300 languages being spoken by its residents.
There are many notable places in Tottenham. One of them is Bruce Castle which was built in 16th century. The place is named after Scottish King Robert the Bruce by the second Lord Coleraine.
Another notable place in Tottenham is All Hallows Church which dates back to 12th century and is one of the oldest buildings in the Borough of Haringey. The church is full of remarkable paintings and is also famous about its eight bells.
