Local Putney Info
Putney lies in the Southwest part of London, forming part of Wimbledon’s Manor. In the past and today people use it for a place to rest, to have a walk and enjoy the nature and the clean air.
The name has unconfirmed roots. In the past it was called Putelei or Puttenheth, or Pottenheth and later received the name Putney. In the old books it was not written to be a manor, but used to receive money from the market taxes and the ferry. And being situated on the Thames, the area has always had flourishing fishery business.
There is an area in Putney called Putney Heath. It is a 400 acres’ waste- land, in the past was gathering place for bandits and robbers. It was described as a dark and mysterious area, heaven for highwaymen, gypsies and fog. Today the place is a public park.
Putney is also famous with its Putney Ferry and the Bridge. The ferry dates even before 11th century and the bridge was once wooden, 150 old, later replaced with a stone one which can be seen today. The district is also an important centre for rowing in the United Kingdom. This significance is connected with the past when the transit of large boats was forbidden.
While in the area, you can visit St. Mary’s Church, Putney Arts Theatre, Putney Bridge, Putney Baptist Chapel, Putney Heath, Putney Vale Cemetery, the War Memorial, etc.
Putney can be connected with a lot of famous people who lived in the area or still do, such as Thomas Cromwell (the architect of the English Reformation and chief minister for King Henry III), Nicholas West, the Countess of Guildford, Gerry Anderson, J.R. Ackerley, Simon Le Bon, and others.
