Local Lee Info
Lee is a residential area of South London. Its ancient name “Leah” in Old English means “the clearing in the wood”. It was really popular place to live for the rich strata of society. That is the reason for the building boom of large country houses and even mansions during the 17th and 18th centuries. Only three residential buildings from this period survived are The Cedars, the Pentland House and Manor House which are now nurses home and library.
The building of Lee Station in 1866 made the district practical, too, because of the high prices of the old coach services and carriages.
During the 19th century different entertainments started taking place. Boxing matches, human foot racing, horse racing, cricket marches in the center of the village, bare knuckle boxing and others.
Some of Lee’s famous residents: Stanley Unwin (publisher), Reggie Schwarz (criketer), James Robertson Justice (actor), Henry Thomas Buckle (English historian), Sir Francis Baring, and others.
