Local Eltham Info
Eltham is a busy district of South East London and one of the largest suburban developments in the Greenwich borough. Today it has a population of over 79 000 residents.
The town was home to many mansions with great historic importance, such as Well Hall House and Avery Hill mansion. The Eltham Palace is maybe one of the most enchanting attractions in London. It was built by a Courtyard family. Inside you can enjoy the stunning Art Deco entrance hall, glorious dining rooms and marvelous medieval Great Gall. It also has plenty of gardens and green areas. In the past it was really popular as a winter home for the wealthy and royal families.
The area is proud of its wide range of attractions. Except the Eltham Palace and Gardens, the Bob Hope Theatre is another interesting sigh. It was called Eltham’s Little Theatre but was renamed after its savior- the actor Bob Hope who prevented the theatre’s closure. The Tarn is also something which worth a visit. It has a lake, a picnic area, an ice well which was used for food storage during the 18th century, and of course the marvelous landscape gardens.
Several places to visit in Eltham: Eltham Palace Courtyard, Eltham Park, Sutcliffe Park, The Eltham Heritage Trail, Eltham Lower Park and Lenister Farm Wetland, Montsalvat Arts Complex, Eltham Wireglass Gallery and Café, Edendale Farm, St Margaret’s Church; several parks as well: Eltham North Adventure Play Park, Oxleas Woods, Castle Wood and Jack Wood, Sutcliffe Park, etc.
Part of the notable residents of the area: Jude Law (actor), Bob Hope (actor), Thomas Burke (author, was born in Eltham), Gavin Peacock (former footballer), Sir Stephen Courtauld M.C. (war veteran and a millionare), Philippa Plantagenet (the 5th countess of Ulster), and others.
