Local Clapham Info
Clapham is a district of South- West London. Its original name “Clopp Ham” means “the village by the short hill”. In the past it had a population less than 100 people. Later, with the beginning of the 17th century, the area started its development and growth. Until the end of the 18th century it had become a stylish place for the wealthy circles of society. The transport had improved, people started using horse drawn buses, electricity was converted, railways were built, huge mansions and villas appeared.
If you want to visit some interesting places, you can take a look at: the High Street, Clapham Park, All Nations Church, Clapham Clock Tower, the Old Town, the Picturehouse, Clapham’s Public Library and Tennis Courts. You can also visit Arding and Hobbs which is said to be the most beautiful and also the largest places to shop outside central London. It was built to serve the shopping needs of the population in Clapham. Clapham Common is another place worth visiting- whole 200 acre of green space which makes it one of the largest open places in London.
During World War II most of the buildings in Clapham suffered a downfall, including the Clapham Tube station. Fortunately most of the structures (for example in Clapham South, North and Clapham Common) had been restored and rebuilt.
Some famous people who lived in Clapham were Henry Cavendish, a scientist who calculated the density of the Earth; Benjamin Franklin, Elizabeth Cook, Henry Thornton, James Stephen, John Venn, William Wilberforce, Dennis Waterman.
