Local Anerley Info
Anerley SE20 is a residential area in South London. The district is the former location of the Crystal Palace. Nobody seemed to notice this little suburb, because the big glass building at the top of the hill was the place where technology exhibitions used to take place. It is not too crowded or too dirty, or attractive but it’s charming.
For 27 years the area had the Croydon Canal, and then it was sold and declared as a financial failure.
In 1841 the Anerley Gardens opened gates. The hotels and tea rooms were built in a traditional Swiss style. The Tea Rooms and Gardens were really popular tourist destination during the Victorian era. With the beginning of the 1860s the area started to grow and develop and huge Victorian houses an mansions were built. During the era of trams a tramway was built and Anerley Road was renamed into Croydon Road.
Anerley has a library, too. Although its small size, it provides a collection of popular fiction and non-fiction for adults, teenagers and children, along with material from basic and popular up to GCSE level. There is a section especially for newspapers and magazines and a selection of multimedia items including CDs and DVDs available to borrow.
Today most of the buildings are preserved; you can take a look at the Victorian mansions turned unto terraced and detached apartments and houses. At Trenholme Road you can see some cottage style homes.
Crystal Palace provides a wide choice of stylish and trendy gastro pubs, eaters and bars. In Crystal Palace Park you can enjoy the vast green spaces, a maze, the grand ruins and even a Dinosaur Park which is host to various summer concerts and sport events.
Some of Anerley’s notable residents were/are: Arthur Bigsworth (an aviator), Ealter de la Mate (famous author of ghost stories, also a poet), Thomas Crapper (famous plumber who promoted the first toilet), James Busby (introduced vines to Australia), and others.
