Local Abbey Wood Info
Situated in the south-eastern part of London, Abbey Wood is part of the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Its name derives from the scattered forest around the mediaeval Lesnes Abbey.
The abbey itself was closed by Cardinal Wolsey in 1525, which to a large extent prevented the housing of the area. Three centuries later the Abbey Wood railway station was opened and the settlement of workers gathered pace. It was during the Great War that the population of the neighbourhood boomed.
Today the area is predominantly residential, featured by a number of parks and open spaces like the Lesnes Abbey Woods, the Local Nature Reserve and Bostall Woods. There is a great number of sporting grounds and tennis courts all around the open spaces.
But the Abbey Wood Gardens overshadow all mentioned above with their splendour. They were created by the Rowlinson family and offer magnificent natural retreat for the local residents. Along with beautiful seasonal sections the Gardens are famous for their collection of perennial trees. The Gardens also offer children’s playgrounds in wooded settings.
Another great feature of Abbey Wood is the local public library.
