Local Woolwich Info
Woolwich SE18 is a south-eastern London area in the Royal Borough of Greenwich.
It is believed the name Woolwich comes from Anglo-Saxon and means “trading place for wool”. The area was inhabited since the Iron Age. Remains of a Roman fort were found where is now Riverside Park.
The small Kentish village became a leading military town from 15th century on. The Royal Arsenal was founded in 1471. Woolwich Dockyard was built in 1512. The Royal Military Academy and the Royal Horse Artillery were opened in 18th century. The 16RA Royal Artillery was closed in 2007, but there is still an army base at the Royal Artillery Barracks. You could visit the Royal Artillery Museum, where is shown the story of the Royal Regiment of Artillery and the Royal Arsenal.
In Woolwich was founded Arsenal Football Club in 1886 by workers at the Arsenal. Its name was changed to Woolwich Arsenal in 1891. But after the club moved to north London (Arsenal Stadium, Highbury) Woolwich prefix fell out.
Woolwich Polytechnic was opened in 1892. After merging with other local colleges it became Thames Polytechnic (1970). It was granted university status in 1992 and became the University of Greenwich. The University is now only an administrative presence in Woolwich, after its relocation to the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich.
In the late 20th century the town of Woolwich declined. This started with the closure of the Siemens (1968) and the closing of the Royal Arsenal (1994), which were the major local employers. The shopping activity was limited and many stores in the town centre were closed, the local economy was affected and the demographics of Woolwich changed.
But nowadays Woolwich is enjoying a new renaissance. Some new High Street chains were opened. The Woolwich Arsenal station, a terminus of the Docklands Light Railway’s London City Airport branch was opened in 2009. A large redevelopment plan started in the end of first decade of 21st century.
The former Woolwich Grand Theatre on Wellington Street (which was also the ABC Regal Cinema and Flamingo’s Nightclub) reopened as an arts centre. There are offered live entertainment, film shows, talks an art and craft market.
