Local Walworth Info

Walworth SE17 is a central area of London. It is 3.1 km (1.9 miles) south east of Charing Cross and is part of the London Borough of Southwark.

In Old EnglishWalworth’s name means Welsh (British) farm. In ancient times it was pronounced “Wealhworth”.

The place’s first documentary appearance was in the Domesday Book of 1086. At that time “Waleorde” was held by Archbishops of Canterbury. The manor’s assets were: a church, four ploughs, 32,000 m2 (8 acres) of meadow. It rendered £3.

During the 16th century in the area developed street trading. At that time farmers rested their livestock on Walworth Common on their way to the city. After the start of the industrial revolution, market stalls were already lined along the whole of the Walworth Road. East Street Market  is officially running since 1880. Now the place is a large and vibrant market, known also as ‘The Lane’, or ‘East Lane’. Sunday is the busiest day of the market, consisting of over 250 stalls. There you can buy food, clothing, household products, jewellery, cosmetics, confectionary, fruit and vegetables and other goods. The place is closed on Monday.

One of the notable local buildings is St. Peter’s Church. It was erected around 1825 by the architect Sir John Soane in the neo-classical style.  It is an indication of the middle-class merchants’ wealth and shows the fact that they could afford such a reputable architect. The church included the Monkey Park,  a beautiful garden, which originally housed a menagerie.

Manor Place Baths was first a wash house, which is now a grade II listed building. In 2005  the KagyuSamye Dzong Tibetan Buddhist Centre renovated the building in order to be their London centre.

Pullens buildings are among the last Victorian tenement buildings survied in London. They are a mixture of live/work spaces and yards.

John Smith House was renamed after John Smith, the leader of the Labour Party between 1992 and 1994 (when he suddenly died). The place was a headquarters of the Labour Party, then a education department of the London Borough of Southwark and now is a hostel.

In 1889 in Walworth was born Charles Chaplin and in 1933 it became the birthplace of Michael Caine. There lived also Robert Browning (poet and playwright), Charles Babbage (mechanical engineer, who originated the concept for a programmable computer), Bill Bailey (comedian and actor), Michael Faraday (scientist, who discovered electromagnetic induction, diamagnetism and electrolysis).
