Local Woolwich Info

Woolwich SE18 is an area of southeast London, in the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

The name Woolwich comes from Anglo-Saxon and means “trading place for wool”. Woolwich was inhabited since the Iron Age. A Roman fort was discovered where now Riverside Park is.

Woolwich was first a small village in Kent, but it later turned into a military and industrial town. Woolwich Dockyard was founded in 1512, the Royal Arsenal was opened in 1471, and the Royal Military Academy – in 1741 and the Royal Horse Artillery dates back to 1793. Today at the Royal Artillery Barracks Woolwich still keeps an army base. Here is located the Royal Artillery Museum.

In 1886 in Woolwich was founded Arsenal Football Club by workers at the Arsenal. The club was named Woolwich Arsenal in 1891. In 1913 the FC moved to Arsenal Stadium, Highbury (north London) and dropped the Woolwich prefix.

Woolwich Polytechnic was founded in 1892. It became Thames Polytechnic in 1970 and University of Greenwich in 1992. In 2000, the University moved in the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich town centre, and left only an administrative presence in Woolwich.

Woolwich used to have four cinemas. Today the former Granada cinema is a bingo hall, the former Odeon is a Pentecostal church, the Century cinema was demolished in the late 1960s and the former ABC is an art club.

In the late 20th century many local people lost their jobs, because the Siemens factory was closed in 1968, the Royal Arsenal closed in 1994. In the early 1990s, in the centre of Woolwich could be seen many discount retailers, empty stores and charity shops.

But after the beginning of new redevelopment, the town went through a renaissance. Several High Street chains opened branches, other shops were refurbished, and many old buildings were redeveloped.

In the 2012 Summer Olympics Woolwich was included as a venue for shooting events.

The Woolwich Grand Theatre (former ABC Regal Cinema and Flamingo’s Nightclub) reopened, but as an arts centre with a cafe. There are taking place live entertainment, talks and film shows. An art and craft market is held there on Saturdays.
