Local Blackheath Info

Blackheath SE3 is a suburb of South East London, located in the London Borough of Lewisham, bordering Greenwich to the north and Lewisham to the west.

The place was first mentioned in 1166, as Blachehedfeld, which means “dark coloured heathland”. Later the name was used for the Victorian suburb, developing in 19th century to the areas known as Blackheath Vase and Blackheath Park.

There is an urban myth, associating the name of the Blackheath with the Black Death of the middle of 14th century or with Plague from 1665. At that time Blackheath was used as a burial pit.

Blackheath was one of the gathering points for the participants of Wat Tyler’s Peasants’ Revolt (1381), and for Jack Cade’s Kentish rebellion (1450). Cornish rebels were defeated in the Battle of Deptford Bridge (also known as Battle of Blackheath) in 1497. In the 17th and 18th centuries the area was famous with highwaymen, operating there.

In the north-eastern part of the area are the Vanbrugh Pits. They form an attractive part of Blackheath, which otherwise is generally rather flat. The pits’ were named by Sir John Vanbrugh, the architect of Castle Howard and Blenheim Palace. His house neighbouring to the Greenwich Park area is now called Vanbrugh Castle.

Blackheath Park was created on the lands of Wricklemarsh Manor by John Cator. It was built in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and contains some fine examples of essential Georgian and Victorian houses.

The Cator Estate contains typical 1960s ‘Span’ houses and flats. The Blackheath High School buildings on Vanburgh Park include the Church Army Chapel (1965). The Morden College (1695) is another notable local building to the south-east of the heath.

Blackheath has numerous and varied shops, restaurants and pubs. South of the local railway station is located the Blackheath Conservatoire of Music and the Arts. Blackheath Halls is a concert venue, owned by Trinity College of Music (based in Greenwich). The area is host to an annual fireworks display in November (the Saturday closest to Guy Fawkes Night). The show is one of the most popular and largest fireworks displays in UK with over forty thousand spectators.

In 1608 Blackheath was the place where golf was introduced to Britain. The Royal Blackheath Golf Club (established in 1766) was one of the first golf associations outside Scotland. In Blackheath was located also the first hockey club in the mid-19th century.

Blackheath is famous also for founding the first rugby club in England in 1858 – Blackheath Rugby Club. Blackheath was among the 12 founding members of the Football Association in 1863.
