Local East Ham Info

East Ham E6 is a London district, situated 8 miles east-northeast of Charing Cross. It is part of the London Borough of New Ham and one of 35 major centres in Greater London according to London Plan.

The name of the area comes from Old English and means ‘a dry area of land between rivers or marshland”. The settlement was first mentioned in an Anglo-Saxon charter of 958 and in the Domesday Book (1086).

In East Ham is located the oldest parish church still in use. This is the Church of St Mary Magdalene, built in the first half of the 12th century.

Until the second half of 19th century Earl Ham was described as a “scattered village”, but after 1859 was opened the East Ham railway station. Since then in the area increased the urbanisation of the district.

In 1903 was erected the Town Hall. It housed the Newham Council until 2009 when it was moved to Newham Dockside. The Town Hall is a Grade II listed Edwardian building, designed by H. Cheers, A. H. Campbell and J. Smith, including a clock tower.

The present East Ham consists mostly of Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses and tree-lined avenues. There are also lots of green spaces. The largest ones are Central Park and Plashet Park, both combining open spaces with playgrounds and cafés. Two of the smaller green areas are Park and Flanders Field. The graveyard of St Mary’s church is maintained as a nature reserve and is the largest of its kind in Greater London.

Today East Ham is a multi-cultural area, with different immigrant communities. Here live many South Asians, African /Caribbean and eastern Europeans. That is why in the area are located many places of worship of different religions. Local people can visit many churches, mosques and two Hindu Temples. There are also many stores and various restaurants. Some of them are offering ethnic dishes others are traditional East End eateries.
