Local Poplar Info
Poplar is an area of East London, located 5.5 miles (8.9 km) east of Charing Cross. In historical plan Poplar was a little village in the parish of Stepney, Middlesex, but in 1817 it became a civil parish.
During the World War I the East End in the British capital was one of the main targets by bombing. Like a part of it, Poplar was stroked very badly several times and many people were killed.
Because of the long connection to London’s docks which for decades were the main occupation in the district, there were several Seamen’s Mission. Some of these buildings were later converted into apartments.
In architectural plan Poplar is a mixture of two periods. 18th and 19th century terraced houses are neighbouring to council estates from 20th century.
In 1921 in the area started Poplar Rates Rebellion, led by the Mayor, George Lansbury. Lansbury later was elected as a leader of the Labour Party and in 1951 a new council housing estate, built to the north of East India Dock Road was named Lansbury Estate after him. At the same time was also built Robin Hood Gardens housing complex, designed by architects Alison and Peter Smithson, and also the Balfron Tower, Carradale House and Glenkerry House, all designed by famous architect Erno Goldfinger. Among the remarkable buildings in Poplar must be noticed also Poplar baths, which were closed in 1988. Balfron Tower is an 84-metre 27-storey housing block which contains 146 homes. It forms a part of the Brownfield Estate, social housing area between Chrisp Street Market and A 12. Balfron Tower was built in 1965 – 1967 in the brutalist architecture style.
Chrisp Street Market was built as a part of the Festival of Britain in 1951 and was designed by Frederick Gibberd. It was the first pedestrian shopping area in the UK, built for this purpose. Chrisp Street Market features shops, cafes, apartments, market stalls, small retail outlets and a prominent clock tower.
St Matthias Old Church was built from the East Indian Company in 1654 like Poplar Chapel. The church is located next to Poplar Town Hall and Poplar Bowls Club, on Poplar High Street. It is opposite Tower Hamlets College. Next to Poplar Workhouse stands re-opened sports centre.
In Poplar were born and lived many popular people like H. M. Tomlinson (travel-writer and journalist), Tommy Flowers (designer of the first programmable electronic computer), Angela Lansbury (Hollywood actress), Harry Redknapp (former manager of Bournemouth, West Ham United, Southampton, Portsmouth and Tottenham Hotspur football clubs), Neil Banfield (coach of Arsenal F. C.).
